Sunny Slope Road Reconstruction Project (College Avenue to Grange Avenue)

The city is planning a reconstruction of Sunny Slope Road between College Avenue and Grange Avenue. It is expected that the project will happen in 2026.
Summary of the Public Information Meeting on June 27, 2024
A Public Information Meeting meeting was held at the New Berlin City Hall on June 27, 2024 from 5pm - 7pm. These are my impressions from attending the meeting and asking questions. The meeting was open-house style, with city staff and alderman Ken Harenda present, with no formal presentation. Large maps of the area and detailed drawings were posted so that residents could view them and ask questions (and provide feedback).
Alderman Ken Harenda attended the meeting and spoke with residents, city staff, and other project representatives.

College Avenue Intersection
The intersection with College Avenue will be widened, so that there is a turn lane each for heading east and west. You can see this detailed on the photo above.
This intersection is the biggest issue that I continue to hear about from people that have to go through it regularly. I'm not sure if adding a dedicated turn lane will help because people won't be squeezing into an area that wasn't intended for two side-by-side vehicles, or if it will just increase the problems of not being able to find a gap in traffic on College Avenue to turn safely.
Walking Path
The walking path will be continuous on the west side of Sunny Slope Road from College Avenue to the south to Grange Avenue to the north. This includes the residential property south of Nicolet Drive.
Other Items
- Visibility at the exit of the Athletic Complex will be improved, as the vegetation on the west side of Sunny Slope Road will be removed and a proper vision triangle established.
- A median will be installed at the Nicolet Drive for pedestrian safety
- A 5' wide area will be paved on each side of the roadway to provide a margin between the driving lane and the ditch
- Some level of access will be provided to Elmwood Elementary School and the Thomson Hollow subdivision during construction, but through-traffic should find another route.
- Construction is expected to be in 2026, but will be timed to avoid the Moorland Road Expansion - College Avenue to Grange Ave./Small Rd. project.
The finished product of the Sunny Slope Road reconstruction will resemble Small Road after its recent reconstruction.
As of July 16, 2024, we could not find any information or details on the city website.
