In April 2019, a referendum put forth by the school district to alleviate the structural operating budget deficit failed. As a result, other decisions will need to be made to make up the difference.

The Journal Sentinel published an article recently about the district's recent decision to eliminate 10 positions in the district and to lower expected wage increases for staff:

With a failed $25 million referendum in the rear-view mirror, the New Berlin School District has started the budget-trimming process, eliminating 10 district positions and lowering the amount of employee wage increases.

On April 29, the school board and administration agreed to eliminate six staff positions for 2019-20: the district’s digital learning coordinator, wellness coordinator and four instructional coaches, New Berlin Superintendent Joe Garza said.

In addition, the district will eliminate three central office support positions and a district maintenance position through a phased approach over the next 6-12 months.

The reductions — accounting for approximately $860,000 in total compensation (salary and benefits) — coupled with a lower-than-budgeted wage increase for employees, will reduce expenditures by nearly $1 million and decrease the district’s projected structural deficit for next school year to approximately $615,000, Garza said.
