How to Contact Your State and Federal Representatives
Part of being in a democracy is that we elect people to represent our interests in making decisions that affect us and how the business of government is conducted on our behalf. Our responsibility is to communicate with these public servants so that they are aware of what we want from them.
In order to do that, you need to know who represents you in the State and Federal legislatures and how to contact them.
Keep in mind that these people receive a lot of communications from constituents, lobbyists, and others looking to bend their ear about various topics. To be the most effective when communicating with them, keep these tips in mind:
- State your name, where you are located (zip code, city) and that you are a constituent.
- Call instead of using postal mail or E-Mail. Postal mail takes too long, and letters and E-Mail are easy to ignore. Calling is the only way to know if you are reaching someone that at least feigns concern for the issues that you are raising. The representatives get reports from their call staff telling them what the most calls are about.
- Meet them in person if you can. Usually before elections, these representatives want to reach out and meet with people in person. This is your opportunity to deliver your message in person and possibly one-on-one.
- For your message to be the most effective, your message needs to be focused. Make notes ahead of calling or meeting someone about your most pressing issues. Keep them to 2-3 maximum so that your first item isn't glossed over by the time you've finished.
- Think about the "elevator pitch." You have just a few seconds to get your point across, so what are you going to say and how are you going to say it?
